What is Risk 1 (Riskettan)?

Risk 1, officially called Risk Education Part 1 (Riskutbildning del 1), is a mandatory theoretical course included in Swedish category B driving license training. The course focuses on the risks that alcohol, drugs and fatigue introduce in traffic. Without a passing Risk 1, you cannot take the practical driving test at Trafikverket (the Swedish Transport Agency).

The purpose of Risk 1 is to give you a deeper understanding of how intoxicants and tiredness affect your ability to drive safely. The course is designed to build awareness of the serious consequences that risky behaviour in traffic can lead to — both for yourself and other road users.

Helios Driving School partners with another regional driving school that runs the Risk 1 course. This means you book through us and complete the course with our partner — an established provider specialised in delivering Risk 1 in a safe and professional setting.

What's included in Risk 1?

Risk 1 covers three core areas central to traffic safety. Through interactive exercises, discussions and visual material, you get a comprehensive picture of the dangers of driving impaired or fatigued.

  • Alcohol in traffic — How alcohol affects reaction time, judgement and coordination. You'll learn about legal limits, drink-driving laws and the consequences of driving under the influence.
  • Drugs and medication — How narcotics and certain medicines impair driving. The course covers prohibited substances and how they affect your ability to make quick decisions.
  • Fatigue and its risks — Why tiredness is one of the most common causes of serious accidents. You'll get concrete tips for avoiding fatigue-related crashes and learn to recognise warning signs.
  • Peer pressure and social situations — How to handle situations where you might feel pressured to drive when you shouldn't. Strategies for saying no and making safe choices.
  • Consequences of risky behaviour — Real examples and statistics that highlight the tragic outcomes of alcohol, drugs and fatigue behind the wheel.

How Risk 1 works

Risk 1 is delivered as an instructor-led group session lasting three hours. The course is held by our partner — a regional driving school specialised in Risk 1. You book the course through Helios and receive all the practical details (time and place) at the time of booking.

During the course, theory is combined with practical examples and group discussions. You'll watch videos and real-life scenarios that illustrate the risks of driving impaired or tired. Our instructors encourage dialogue and questions throughout to make sure you fully grasp the material.

After the course, your completion is registered directly in Trafikverket's system. There's no exam to pass — you simply need to participate actively throughout. You'll receive a certificate confirming you've completed Risk 1.

Requirements and preparation

There are no special prerequisites for taking Risk 1. You don't need to have started practising or taken any driving lessons beforehand. In fact, we recommend completing Risk 1 early in your driving license training — the knowledge you gain is valuable from day one.

  • You must be at least 16 years old to participate in the course.
  • Bring valid ID (national ID card, passport or driving license).
  • You need a learner's permit (körkortstillstånd) from Transportstyrelsen, or to have applied for one.
  • No special equipment or preparation is required — come as you are.
