What is Risk 2?
Risk 2, officially called Risk Education Part 2 (Riskutbildning del 2), is the second and final mandatory risk course in Swedish driving license training. Unlike Risk 1, which is theoretical, Risk 2 is a practical course held on a skid pad. The course must be completed before you can take the driving test at Trafikverket.
During Risk 2 you experience and handle situations that can arise when driving in difficult conditions — such as slippery roads, sudden obstacles and emergency situations. By practising in a controlled environment, you build both knowledge and confidence to handle similar situations in real traffic.
Helios Driving School partners with Motorbana Strängnäs to deliver Risk 2 in professional and safe conditions. As a student, you're picked up at Eskilstuna train station and driven to and from the track — so you don't need to arrange your own transport. Our instructors accompany you throughout the course and provide personal guidance.
What's included in Risk 2?
Risk 2 is an intensive course combining theory and practice. Over four hours, you carry out a series of exercises that simulate real-life dangerous situations. The course is designed to give you hands-on experience handling a vehicle at the edge of control.
- Emergency braking — Practise braking effectively at high speed, on both dry and slippery surfaces. Learn how ABS brakes work and how to use them optimally.
- Evasive manoeuvres — Train to swerve quickly around sudden obstacles in the road without losing control of the vehicle.
- Driving on slippery surfaces — Experience how the car behaves on icy and slippery roads. Learn to correct skids and adapt your driving to road conditions.
- Speed perception and safety distances — Understand how speed affects braking distance and what distances are required in different conditions.
- Risk awareness — Develop your ability to identify and avoid potential hazards in traffic by understanding the vehicle's limitations.
- Theory session — Review of road safety, accident statistics and how you as a driver can minimise risks every day.
How Risk 2 works
Risk 2 is held at an approved skid pad and lasts a total of four hours. The day starts with a short theory session covering the day's exercises and the principles behind the course.
After the theory portion, the group heads out onto the track for the practical exercises. You drive a training vehicle under the guidance of a qualified instructor. The exercises are structured in steps, from simpler tasks to more challenging scenarios, so you gradually build up your skill and confidence.
Throughout the course, instructors are on site to give you direct feedback and tips. You get the opportunity to do multiple laps and repeat exercises until you feel comfortable. After the course, your completion is registered directly in Trafikverket's system.
Requirements and preparation
Before you can take Risk 2, there are a few things you need to have in place. The course is practical in nature and requires some preparation for the day.
- You must have completed Risk 1 (Risk Education Part 1) before you can take Risk 2.
- Bring valid ID (national ID card, passport or driving license).
- Wear comfortable clothes and sturdy shoes suitable for outdoor activity — you'll be outside for part of the course.
- Bring water and ideally a small snack, since the course lasts four hours.
- There's no requirement on the number of driving lessons before Risk 2, but we recommend having some driving experience to get the most out of the course.
